Beilue: Kaepernick’s national anthem protest came 48 years after a more meaningful one

Nearly 50 years ago, long before Colin Kaepernick decided to sit this one out, there was a national anthem protest that shook America. Even though I was only 10 years old, I remember it well.

Tommie Smith and John Carlos, gold and bronze medalists in the 200 meters in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, stood on the medal stand. Their heads were bowed. Their warm-ups were pulled up to show black socks. They each raised a fist on high that wore a black glove.
