A Supreme Court ruling tightens rules on police use of drug-sniffing dogs during traffic stops, but local law enforcement agencies are expressing doubt that the new restrictions will affect them.

In the high court’s majority opinion, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote that the practice of detaining stopped drivers for extra time to perform a drug-dog sniff on their vehicles is a violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Drug-dog sniffs that do not add time to the stop are still legal, the court held.
