Diocese officials reschedule groundbreaking

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Amarillo has rescheduled a groundbreaking for its new pastoral center for 11 a.m. March 7 at 4502 N.E. 24th Ave. due to this weekend’s expected inclement weather.

The new center will replace the current diocese headquarters at 1800 N. Spring St., which was built in 1954.

The groundbreaking was initially scheduled for today.

Fifth-grader Liam Nyikos of Riverside Elementary School in Carlsbad is the region's best speller. The 10-year-old student correctly spelled the championship word "minstrels" to win the 2015 El Paso Times Spelling Bee on Friday at Bel Air High School's Tartan Theatre.

Late filing frenzy fills up City Council ballot

The week closed with the city’s May 9 ballot holding challengers for all incumbents as late filers rounded out the field.

There are two crowded races with five candidates in each.

Friday saw several applications for places on the ballot, including V. Brandon Smith, a 39-year-old maintenance manager, who stepped up for Place 3. That position is held by retired banker Lilia Escajeda, 71, who is also being challenged by Mariah Strong-Woods, a 47-year-old menu consultant and designer.
