Rivalry heats up Halloween night

Amarillo High School and Tascosa High School faced off once again Friday night in district competition. The teams’ deep-seated rivalry and the fans’ excitement was palpable at Dick Bivins Stadium as the teams poured onto the field for a game that really mattered for the first time since 2011.

Bridget Carrillo, a Class of ’88 alumna, watched the Rebels creep closer and closer to a touchdown as she recalled her days at Tascosa, the rivalry that began years before and how the nature of the contest has changed over the years.

AISD substitute accused of hitting child

A substitute teacher for Amarillo Independent School District stands accused of hitting a student in the back, Amarillo ISD spokeswoman Holly Shelton said in a statement Friday.

Amarillo Police Department is investigating allegations of a simple assault involving a woman and a boy at Avondale Elementary School on Oct. 22, Sgt. Brent Barbee said.

On Oct. 27, the boy’s parent filed an online report with APD that alleged the adult “punched the child’s back” in class while the child was seated, Barbee said.
