In the summer of 1978, local thrill-seekers witnessed the opening of Aqua Thrillway on South Padre Island Drive. The $400,000 water slide featured three channels built into a 35-foot hill. Riders sat on polyurethane mats and shot down the channels on a continuous flow of water into a splash pool at the bottom.
